Healthy Kids Community Challenge Burlington partners Mohawk Gardens PS and Robert Bateman HS students in Food Literacy Initiative

Healthy Kids Community Challenge Burlington recently paired Halton Food for Thought Student Nutrition Program partner schools Mohawk Gardens PS and Robert Bateman HS students in Food Literacy Initiative.

0ver 50 Grade 5 and 6 students from Mohawk Gardens PS made the trek on Tuesday January 16th to Robert Bateman HS where Chef Murray Zehr, fellow culinary program leads and a team of student mentors taught the basics of preparing healthy soups.  On the menu were:  Minestrone, French Onion, Mexican Bean, Red Lentil, Potato and Carrot Ginger soups plus fresh, made from scratch rolls.

The sights and sounds were incredible!

On their return trip, Wednesday January 17th, the students sampled their masterpieces.  Overheard during their visit “try mine, I think it tastes the best”, “I can hardly wait to make this soup at home” and “my parents would never believe I made this- it is so good!”

As a wrap, Mohawk Gardens PS students were provided vegetable peelers to take home and encourage to take all the food skills they have learned and passion they have developed in the past couple of days and share it with their families.

Improving Food Literacy, one healthy home made bowl of soup at a time!  Together we help ensure “no student goes hungry!”
