Today, Halton Food for Thought is proud to share it is the recipient of a 2023/24 grant from the Burlington Foundation’s Community Fund. The grant will help to increase access to Student Nutrition Programs to Burlington students through expansion to two new schools.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from The Burlington Foundation through this grant. These funds will help us expand our programs to two new schools in Burlington, providing their students safe, reliable access to healthy meals and snacks at school,” says Nancy Rumple, Executive Director of Halton Food for Thought. “This grant brings us one step closer to our vision of no student going hungry at school.”

“We are proud to provide funding to these extraordinary organizations and their teams,” says Megan Tregunno, CEO of the Burlington Foundation. “Halton Food for Thought is one of 17 organizations selected that are contributing to creating a strong sense of belonging in our community. Resources from the Burlington Community Fund are especially significant because the Fund is made up contributions from community donors,” says Megan.

The Burlington Foundation’s annual granting program provides grants through its Burlington Community Fund – a dedicated unrestricted endowment Fund established to support the greatest needs of our community. Community organizations are eligible to apply for a grant up to $10,000.

Halton Food for Thought will join a private Grantee Celebration with all recipient organizations, to be held at the Burlington Public Library (Central Location) on April 10, 2024.

About Halton Food for Thought

Halton Food for Thought has been feeding Halton students for over two decades.  Founded in 1997 by a group of parents who noticed that not every child at school had food in their lunch box and that for many kids what food they had did not contain enough nutrients to fuel their minds and bodies for learning. Halton Food for Thought provides more than 92,000 Halton students access to healthy meals and snacks at school daily through a Student Nutrition Program (SNP). Halton Food for Thought ensures over 89% of all Halton students have access to a SNP through our 149 partner schools.

The 3 Main Ways

What began with food programs at 6 Halton schools in 1997 has now evolved to 130+schools in Halton programs in every Halton school, ensuring that no student in the region goes hungry at school.

Along with our community partners and army of volunteers, we are able to nourish and nurture generations of students. We know that nutrition is essential to their success and that habits established in childhood set the foundation for healthy behaviours in adulthood.

Our work is even more crucial, given that Canada remains one of the few industrialized countries with out a national school food program. As a result, access to proper nutrition is inconsistent and systems rely mainly on ‘patchwork’ solutions.

Our history isn’t uncommon; a grassroots group of people who identify a problem and come together to form a solution.  In this case, one of the strongest groups you can have behind your cause: Parents. Fast forward to 2007, just ten years later, and HFFT became an incorporated, registered, charity with its own Board of Directors and 63 programs. As of July 2019, HFFT has partner programs in 130 schools, providing more than 79,000 Halton students access to healthy food at school.

In the spring of 2014, we set out to revive the agency. We wanted to realign ourselves with our cause and ensure all of our work was unified toward one goal. Our Mission and Vision are the core of our values and fuel all of our work in the community. In partnership with the community, we feed students healthy food so they can succeed.
