Post's Corners PS shared about the positive impact of their Student Nutrition Program

For almost 30 years Halton Food for Thought has been supporting students in reaching their full potential through connecting them with healthy meals and snacks to support them at school. We all know that when we are full, we are better able to concentrate on our work, activities and connecting with others – the same goes for students. This is why our programs are so important across Halton region where all students in our partner schools are offered the same access to nutritious food to help ensure they have the energy they need for their day ahead.

This month during FEEDUARY, we are shining a light on the importance of our programs and the role they play in student success. A group of partner schools are welcoming members of the Halton community to help us share the impact of our programs firsthand.

One school that looks forward to FEEDUARY each year is Posts’ Corners PS in Oakville. The school staff are proud to support their Student Nutrition Program and share its benefits with guests. Post’s Corners recognizes its Student Nutrition Program has the ability to create a stronger community through parent and student volunteer opportunities and by welcoming all students to participate in accessing the program.

When asked about the benefits of the program Sandra Lynch, Vice-Principal at Post’s Corners let us know, “At our school, the program has become a cornerstone of connection and community. It brings students, parents and staff closer together through the volunteer opportunities it has created. It’s amazing to see how something as simple as food has created a strong sense of belonging for all those involved in the program.”

In addition to a stronger school community, schools have reported to Halton Food for Thought that they also see increased attentiveness in class and energy levels with students in relation to their program. “I’ve also seen it foster mindfulness and self-regulation. Students are welcomed into the classroom by their teachers and given time to eat snacks from the breakfast cart. This helps our students to feel cared for as they ease into the school day,” added Sandra. “Our teachers report a big difference: kids are calmer, better able to focus and have more energy for both learning and play.” These are all key elements in supporting students in reaching their full potential.

When asked to reflect on the impact of the program at Post’s Corners Sandra shared, “It’s incredible to see how much the student nutrition program has achieved. It’s a daily reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to support its children. Thanks to Halton for Thought, our parent and student volunteers, and everyone involved, we’ve created something truly special: a school nutrition program that ensures every child has access to healthy food to eat, feels cared for, and is ready to thrive in and out of the classroom.”

We at Halton Food for Thought could not be more grateful for the support we receive from our school partners and those who champion our programs such as Sandra. Thank you for all that you do to support the health and well-being of Halton students!
