Meet Zuha: A Student Voice for Healthy School Snacks

Hey!!!

I’m Zuha, and I’m a grade 7 student at CH Norton Public School. I didn’t know much about the Halton Food for Thought Program until my mom started working there, and then I got to know about who was behind all these healthy snack programs that I always looked to whenever I ran out of lunch and was still a little hungry.

I really think that the breakfast program is a great idea, and that my school should support it. For now, we have the healthy snack bin which people use during lunch and student leaders want to see that upgraded to a grab and go breakfast cart for more benefits.

I’m pretty active in sports in and out of school, such as volleyball, dodgeball, soccer, and more. It was only until Ramadan had begun and I had to start fasting that I realized how important those snack bins were for anyone who didn’t get to have much food at home and didn’t or couldn’t bring any lunch to school.

It made me realize that these programs aren’t just about snacks — they’re about making sure students have the energy they need to learn and get through the day. I am also aware of how very few kids realize this and I and my student leads in our club have now taken it upon us to promote it more within the school.

I’m really glad programs like Halton Food for Thought exist to support students in our schools.

Happy Nutrition Month!
