Rotary Clubs are known for their dedication to support members in their community through acts of service and creating community events that bring people together and raise funds to give back to many worthy causes. The Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore amplifies all these things within the Burlington community and beyond through the dedication of their 55+ members.

At Halton Food for Thought, we have been privileged to work alongside Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore for 10 years this month as they have given their time every week during the school year to support the operations of the King’s Road Student Nutrition Program.

Over this time, the Club has supported thousands of students connecting them to a warm meal to start their school day. Students gather in the school gym, welcomed by warm smiles from the volunteersto pick up their breakfast and enjoy the meal with friends before heading off to class.

When asked about the club’s experience at King’s Road, Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore member Janet Lucas spoke about the support of the program for students, “This is one of our most loved volunteer activities. There’s nothing better than beginning the day with the smiling faces of children. We’ve watched students we first met in kindergarten grow into confident Grade 6 students ready for a new school. While it’s bittersweet to see them move on, we’re proud knowing we helped by providing a warm breakfast, so hunger never stood in the way of learning.

In addition to their time, the Club has donated over $30,000 to support the purchasing of nutritious food for the students at this school through proceeds of Canada's Largest RibFest. As the cost of food has increased steadily over the past few years, their consistent support both financially and in-kind through volunteering has helped to maintain the strength of this program at the school.

When asked about the impact of Rotary Burlington Lakeshore, Halton Food for Thought Executive Director, Aliya Khawari has this to say, “We are so grateful for the support of the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore, service groups like this one, play a vital role not only in supporting our programs but also creating community where it is most needed. To have this group dedicated to King’s Road PS for 10 years is an incredible milestone for them, us and this program. We are forever grateful for all their support.”

Thank you to every Rotarian who has helped support this program over the years, we are so grateful for your dedication to fueling the future of King’s Road students and helping us ensure they have a nutritious start to their day.
