Volunteering to help ensure children have access to nutritious food at school.

By: Joanne Jones

My time with Halton Food for Thought has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding chapters of my professional and personal life. Serving as a Board Director, and later taking on the roles of Board Chair and Secretary, has given me the opportunity to contribute to an organization that is making a tangible difference in the lives of children in Halton every single day.

Over the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing—and supporting—the remarkable growth and evolution of the program. What began as a strong, community-rooted initiative has expanded its reach, deepened its impact, and strengthened its infrastructure. The organization has scaled its programs to serve more schools, adapted to changing community needs, and navigated unprecedented challenges, including the increased demand brought on by economic pressures and the pandemic. Through it all, Halton Food for Thought has remained focused on its core mission: ensuring that every child has access to nutritious food so they can learn, grow, and succeed.

As a board member, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication of staff, volunteers, partners, and fellow directors who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Together, we’ve worked to enhance governance, build sustainable funding models, and increase awareness about the critical link between nutrition and education. The organization today is not only larger—it is more resilient, more innovative, and better positioned to meet the needs of the community than ever before.

My decision to support Halton Food for Thought has always been rooted in a simple but powerful belief: no child should go to school hungry. Access to food is foundational, and when that need is met, it opens the door to confidence, focus, and opportunity. Knowing that our work directly contributes to a child’s ability to thrive in the classroom is both humbling and motivating.

It has been an honour to serve in leadership roles and to be part of an organization that truly changes lives. Halton Food for Thought is more than a program—it is a community effort driven by compassion, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the well-being of children.
